Students tour Aerotel

As part of the industry awareness aspect of their programme, the students of the day class section of the Associate Degree in Computer Systems technology paid a visit to the Aerotel (Aeronautical Telecommunications Limited) facilities in Kingston.

The VTI group, led by Dr. Wayde Marr, was received at the Braemar offices by Mr. Derrick Grant, the Regional Manager of Aerotel.

Touring Aerotel

Mr. Grant explained that Aerotel offers specialized information technology and telecommunication Services to the Civil Aviation of Jamaica. He noted that Aerotel maintains all digital microwave links and air traffic telecommunications which are used as communication, navigation and surveillance aids for all aircraft operating in the region. Students were also guided through the Air Traffic Control centre where they observed traffic controllers in action, guiding international air traffic traversing the Jamaican air-space.

As an added treat, the group was taken on a tour of the Kool97 FM radio station at Winchester Avenue.. Radio Announcer, Wayne Whyte and Disc Jockey, Craig Ross explained the operation of the broadcast studio, while the broadcast engineer took the group behind the scenes for an explanation of the broadcast technology used by the station.

Special thanks to Mr. Derrick Grant who made all arrangements for the tour.
